Do skid steers have titles to Prove Ownership?

I’m looking at buying a used skid steer and one thing I’m not sure about is paperwork.
With cars or trucks you usually get a title that proves ownership, but I’m not sure if heavy equipment works the same way.
Do skid steers have titles or some kind of official ownership document? Or is it usually just a bill of sale and the serial number?
Just trying to make sure I’m not buying something with questionable history.

Most skid steers don’t have titles like road vehicles. Construction equipment is usually considered non-titled equipment, so ownership is normally proven with a bill of sale and the machine’s serial number instead of a vehicle title. If you’re buying used, make sure the bill of sale includes the make, model, serial number, hours, and the seller’s information.

Another good step is asking the dealer to run the serial number. Manufacturers and dealers can sometimes check if the machine was reported stolen or flagged in their system. It’s not perfect, but it’s one of the easiest ways to avoid buying a stolen skid steer.

When financing equipment there can also be something called a UCC filing attached to the machine. That basically means a lender has a lien on the equipment until the loan is paid off. It’s not a title like a car title, but it’s another reason to make sure the machine is free of liens before buying.
